LARAMIE, Wyo. – Former University of Wyoming defensive end Josh Biezuns became the fourth former Cowboy to receive a free-agent offer to play in the NFL.

The Chicago Bears reached free-agent terms with Biezuns, who will participate in the team’s minicamp later this month. He’ll see a former teammate, as the Bears also signed former Pokes running back Alvester Alexander recently.

Biezuns was seventh on the team with 63 tackles in 2011, with a team-high 11 tackles for loss and was second on the team with five sacks. He also had two fumble recoveries and five forced fumbles.

The versatile defender started at three positions on the Cowboy defense and was named Second Team All-Mountain West after his junior season at defensive end. He was selected MW Defensive Player of the Week for his performance vs. Bowling Green on Sept. 17, recording two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.

The other Cowboys to receive free-agent offers include Tashaun Gipson (Cleveland) and Brian Hendricks, who signed with the Washington Redskins.

Wyoming senior strong safety Luke Ruff has been named to the watch list for the 2012 Lott Trophy, which was released Monday.

Ruff, a product of Castle Rock, Colo., recorded 102 tackles (54 solo), 2.0 tackles for loss (-4 yards), two pass breakups and one forced fumble last season. He contributed to a Wyoming defense that ranked third in the Conference in pass defense, allowing only 199.6 yards per game through the air.

Ruff was named as one of four Wyoming team captains for the 2012 season. The Mountain West is one of six leagues (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC) with multiple student-athletes named to the 42-person watch list.

Sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, the award is given to a student-athlete who exhibits the same characteristics Ronnie Lott embodied during his Hall of Fame playing career: integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.

Boise State senior linebacker J.C. Percy was the other MW defender named to the watch list. Percy, a native of Blackfoot, Idaho, tallied 48 tackles (19 solo), one interception, one forced fumble and two pass breakups in 13 games last season. Boise State’s top-returning tackler, Percy has appeared in each of the Broncos’ 40 games since his debut season in 2009.

Voters for the Lott Trophy include selected members of the national media, previous finalists, members of the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation Board of Directors, the Legends Coaches and distinguished alumni of various schools around the nation. The winner, who will be announced at the annual black-tie gala in December, receives $25,000 for his institution’s general scholarship fund.

Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly was last year’s Lott Trophy recipient.

Three former University of Wyoming football standouts earned their shot at the next level over the weekend, when they received invitations to NFL free-agent minicamps.

Alvester Alexander, Tashaun Gipson and Brian Hendricks will participate in upcoming minicamps with three NFL teams. Running back Alexander signed with the Chicago Bears, defensive back Gipson signed with the Cleveland Browns and linebacker Hendricks signed with the Washington Redskins.

A junior in 2011, Alexander found the end zone often in his UW career, finishing with 27 career rushing TDs in three seasons. That was third on UW’s all-time list. That total included a single-game record five touchdowns versus CSU in 2010 and 14 for the season, a UW single-season record. He finished with 2,127 rushing yards, ninth in UW history.

Gipson was a ball-hawking defensive back as a four-year starter. He ended his career starting all 50 games he played at UW. Versus CSU in the last regular-season game of 2011, Gipson snagged his ninth interception of his career, moving him into fourth-place all-time in UW history with four other players. He played at safety and cornerback for the Pokes. He was a Second Team All-Mountain West selection as a senior.

Hendricks was a four-year contributor for Wyoming and produced one of the best careers at the linebacker position in UW history. As a senior, Hendricks had 13 tackles in his last game as a Cowboy, the New Mexico Bowl, to move to No. 11 on UW’s all-time tackles list. Hendricks finished his Wyoming career with 309 tackles, just two shy of tying for 10th place. His 23 tackles vs. Air Force was the best single-game performance in the NCAA in 2009 and set the Wyoming school record. It also tied him for the Mountain West single-season record. Hendricks was a three-time all-conference selection in the Mountain West, earning Second Team honors as a senior.
